A second nation to use nukes?
Well this is fun — it sounds like Israel may be preparing to become the second nation ever to use nuclear weapons. They’re apparently practicing taking out Iran’s nuclear facilities. They’re talking about using strategic nukes (nuclear “bunker busters”), so the damage they would cause isn’t nearly as large as it could be, but then again, they are still nukes. Unfortunately, Iran’s facilities are buried so deep that there are really only two ways to take them out: infiltrate them by land, or nuke them by air.
So, is this a good thing? I don’t think so. The United States is the only nation to have ever used nuclear weapons, and many would argue that it was a mistake. Mankind doesn’t need to start using nuclear weapons more regularly. Nuking Iran would probably irrevocably harm Israel’s reputation in the world, and might drive a huge rift between US and Europ (assuming the United States defends Israel over the use of nuclear weapons). The optimal solution would be diplomacy, and Iran hasn’t shut out the rest of the world yet. I really hope it doesn’t come to nuclear war again.
