Cool site: United Nuclear
I’m starting a new semi-regular blogging series. Basically, I’ll be digging through my large collection of web bookmarks and pointing out the most interesting ones. I’ll start off the series with a really cool site called United Nuclear. They offer a wide variety of scientific supplies, including just about everything needed for performing chemistry experiments. Unfortunately, they were raided by the police in 2003 because some of the chemicals they were selling could be used to make illegal fireworks. Hopefully it’s since been worked out, as people trying to run amateur science experiments have increasingly run into more and more unnecessary regulatory roadblocks.
Some of the interesting things for sale on United Nuclear’s website include meteorites, uranium ore, radioactive isotopes, Trinitite (which is desert sand that was melted into glass during the original Trinity nuclear test), supermagnets, and much, much more. I was actually contemplating buying some ore, but I realized I don’t really have a safe way to store it. I’d also like to get my hands on a supermagnet — those things are insane.
