The importance of undergraduate research

My column in The Diamondback came out today. I wrote on the topic of undergraduate research. Specifically, I’m trying to encourage my fellow students to get involved in research. I’m currently working on a project using imagery from Mars Global Surveyor and it’s a great experience (much better than boring lectures, certainly). I’m also in a group called Team GAMER under the Gemstone Program at the University of Maryland. We’re finishing up the writing of our thesis now after three and a half years of research.

So I’ve gotten more than my fill of undergraduate research, and I really would recommend it to others. An undergraduate education shouldn’t just be about being lectured to and learning. It should also be about discovering.
