We are spending the weekend on work on the house. So far today we've cut a lot of beadboard, enclosed a pipe in a box, mounted hangers for a beam and cut the beam to length, run several runs of electrical cable, and dinstalled two switches and an outlet. And it's only 5 till 8, we have plenty of time to get more done this evening.

Why is it I work harder on my days off than I do when I'm at work?

Here in the UK the american holiday of the 4th of July is completely ignored.
If you look at the bbc frontpage today, for example, the only story about the US is the conspiracy theory around the collapse of WTC tower 7.

Jack: And the sad thing is, it just keeps going. Most of them don't even bother to read the comments in front of theirs. If so, they'd see that they were getting made fun of for exactly the thing they were about to do.

Fortunately, the DS is not limited to commercial roguelikes. For lovers of Nethack, I must shamelessly promote my own endeavour, POWDER, in which I did not shy from trying to reach for Nethack's complexity. Since that was true when my target was the GBA rather than the DS, I don't think anyone can claim that the handheld form factor somehow reduces complexity.

On that note, Nethack exists for the DS.

For an overview of handheld roguelikes: http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=List_of_handheld_roguelikes

arensb's point is good explanation of the problem, however. Making a complicated roguelikes requires layers after layers of polish. This isn't something you can just throw more people at - you need to spend time. And then, if successful, and you make a game people can play for years, where is your revenue stream? The answer I think has to be to treat the roguelike more of a service and somehow get people subscribed to it. This then becomes like a single-player MMORPG where you pay a subscription fee to receive a constant stream of updates.

You actually saw the MTV interview linked in the interview and you don't think he's a nitwit?

Here's a helpful suggestion; don't take your own advice when sizing up people, get a second opinion.

Quirky means a bit eccentric. He isn't quirky, he's a self-absorbed douche and an egomaniac. The documentary may seem biased, but his real life persona isn't far from it by most accounts.

The interview you linked pretty much makes him out to be the laughable twit the documentary made him out to be.

How you missed something so obvious is anybody's guess.

T2A`: Yeah, I will admit to LOLing at that (and nearly ROFLing as well). His height kept on getting inflated as the events progressed, which itself was funny, then they said he was something feet and 13 inches, which really took me over the top.

And I agree that this show would be better if it was aimed at MXC's demographic.

ABC's MXC ripoff isn't even a good one. The thing that makes MXC good is that its commentary is rather dirty and up to its armpits in puns. ABC's version is extremely clean in comparison, and it's obviously dumbed down for the general American audience, which makes it about three to five times less humorous.

During the one episode I watched, the funniest thing they did was to say some large dude was something like 9' 13" tall. I don't know why but I LOL'd for a bit when I heard it.

This is the only mea culpa you need to concern yourself with. :]

drinian: I'm not ashamed of enjoying bad television for its novelty. It's just that that aspect of American Gladiators wore off very quickly, leaving me to quickly realize that the series is completely not worth watching.

Speaking of novelty television, have you seen the new ABC game show series? Wipeout is a straight-out American rip-off of MXC (which, granted, was itself a rip-off of a not-nearly-as-perverted Japanese game show). Wipeout has all of the same kinds of humor right down to picking people with odd professions and then relentlessly ripping on them through the use of puns and put-downs, except that unlike MXC, these are the actual professions of the participants and not just wholly inaccurate voice-overs. Airing right after Wipeout is "I Survived A Japanese Game Show", in which the actual gameplay is completely stupid and uninspiring. But so far I've found the show enjoyable because it shows a lot of Japanese culture (along with how the typical ignorant American reacts to it). Also, it's hysterical that the Japanese game show audience is clearly laughing at the gaijin participants, not with them. Instead of the show being about "look at those silly foreigners!", it's about "look at those foreigners laughing at us being silly!" It's a refreshing change of perspective.

I wish I had brought my digicam so I'd have some pictures to put up here on the blog, but I've never been good about bringing my camera anywhere (or anticipating a need for it, for that matter).

One little thing I forgot to mention in the post: we tried the PSk31 band on 20 metes but couldn't get anywhere with it. The entire band was packed full of loud signals, and we couldn't break through. The sound of all of those PSK31 signals coming in at once was a sound out of this world. It reminded me of the alien harmonies from the movie Close Encounters of a Third Kind.

Saw this in the random posts bit, and I'll leave you with a quote from the movie The Mist.

"The human race is fundamentally insane. If you put two of us into a room together we're soon gonna start figuring out good reasons to kill one another."

William: I'm pretty sure that they came from the Gamers near the Akihabara train station. I remember them being near a selection of Evangelion t-shirts.

However, that was well over a year ago.

Actually, I'm conveniently here in Japan. I'll keep an eye out for them. I can ship letter-ish stuff back to the States for pretty cheap.
You might also check J-list.

It's cute that some of you attack organized religion as if the philosophy and the people who subscribe to it are one-in-the-same. That you espouse liberal philosophies and disagree with the more "traditionalist" ideals of, for instance Catholocism, doesn't make Catholics the purveyors of social injustice. That you fail to or refuse to acknowledge their programs help society doesn't make them wrong, nor does it make you right.

It's interesting that you blame a "program" for STD transmission. I'd blame the irresponsible behavior and those who practice it, personally. Seems brutally obvious to me, but then, liberals tend to fail to understand the obvious. Maybe that's why you have so many of them in Scientology.

In any case, I like your cause. I'd like to see the CoS take a fall. I've seen what they do to people, bilking them of $1000's. However, I take issue that your movement is the first Stand Alone Complex. For years, I've rejected the idea that the over-arching Socialist views in American media/entertainment was a conspiracy; that is was more like a Stand Alone Complex. A large group of like-minded people attracted to similar fields; fields that are the vehicles of mass-produced, mass-distributed ideas.

Good luck with your movement. Try to remember that "movements" like yours are very similar to organized religion - a large group of like-minded individuals sharing a belief system and engaging in similar behaviors. Also remember that any human endeavor is prone to mistake and error. Humans are fallable. Is it Christianity's fault the Crusades took place, or is it the fault of the times and the geo-political structures and individuals in positions to move men and materials around the world? Was every Christian a participant in the killing of innocent people? Do you justify and support persecuting every member of a group because of the behavior of a portion of that group?

Think that's bad?

The house that my parents and I have lived in since 1987 was previously owned by an elderly former nurse. That's over twenty years ago, and I'm sure she sent change-of-address cards, etc. when she moved out.

However, that doesn't stop us from getting credit card offers from the American Federation of Nurses every few months for her. Even more bizarrely, I have recently started receiving junk mail advertising the publication "Nursing 2008" -- with my name on it! I can only surmise that this nursing organization paid some company for the service of having their database "corrected," and decided that the old lady's name was actually mine.
